What Is Airsoft?

Learn what airsoft is, how the game works, what formats exist, and why it has grown into a global tactical sport.

What is airsoft?

Airsoft is a tactical team game in which players use realistic-looking replica guns that fire 6 mm plastic BBs, usually in the 0.20-0.40 g range. Compared with paintball, airsoft hits are usually less painful and leave fewer visible marks, while the gameplay itself often feels more immersive and realistic.

The history of airsoft as a sport

Airsoft began in Japan in the 1970s. At the time, civilian ownership of real firearms was heavily restricted, which created demand for realistic-looking but safer replica guns that fired plastic projectiles. The sport spread from East Asia to Europe during the 1980s and 1990s and has since grown into a global hobby and sport with millions of players worldwide.

Game formats

Skirmish is the most common format. Two teams compete to capture objectives, eliminate opponents, or complete missions within a defined area and time limit.

Mil-sim (Military Simulation) is a more realistic and narrative-driven format. Operations last longer, use command structures and logistics, and build gameplay around a developed scenario. Mil-sim requires more preparation and discipline.

CQB (Close Quarters Battle) is focused on close-range engagement, usually in buildings or dense urban layouts. It is faster, more reactive, and demands quick reflexes.

Sniper / DMR (Designated Marksman) is a support role in which a player uses a precision platform to assist the team from longer distances.

Airsoft as a sport and lifestyle

Airsoft is not just a game - it is a sport that develops several valuable qualities. Physical activity is a natural part of it, because long operations involve hours of movement, cover usage, climbing, and running. It is a more effective workout than many people assume.

Teamwork and communication are the foundation of every successful airsoft unit. A poorly coordinated team can lose quickly even against less experienced opponents. Good communication, clear roles, and following a chain of command are key to a successful operation.

Strategic thinking is one of airsoft\'s most attractive aspects. Reading terrain, selecting tactical positions, and predicting the opponent\'s moves turn the game into something much deeper than simple shooting.

Safety in airsoft

Even though airsoft is a safe sport when handled properly, it has rules that must be followed strictly. Eye protection is mandatory - always, with no exceptions. A 6 mm plastic BB traveling at over 100 meters per second can seriously injure the eye.

Weapon handling is just as important - every gun should be treated as if it were loaded. The safety must be engaged outside the active game zone.

Airsoft vs paintball

These two sports are often compared, but they differ in important ways. Airsoft uses more realistic-looking replica guns that better imitate real firearms. Paintball uses larger paint-filled projectiles that leave a clear visible mark. Airsoft relies more on honesty, because the BB does not always leave a visible trace, so players are expected to call their own hits. Paintball provides visible confirmation of impact.

Airsoft in Estonia

The airsoft community in Estonia is strong and well organized. N.A.C. runs public events across the country as well as major events such as Spring Fest, Autumn Fest, Opium Skies, and Stalker Series, all of which have grown into internationally recognized airsoft calendar events.
